KONE guide rails are designed to direct the travel of the elevator car and the counterweight inside the elevator shaft. The guide rails are designed to ensure a safe distance between static components (e.g., landing doors) and moving components (e.g., car) is maintained at all times. In addition, the guide rails are designed to provide a matching friction surface for the safety gear friction pads, which, when activated, prevent the car from moving. In KONE MonoSpace elevators, the hoisting machine is fixed to the guide rails.
