Nienke Steen

Nienke Steen is a passionate and visionary sustainability leader with more than two decades of experience driving transformation in the global garment and textiles industry. As Global Director for Consumer Products and Textiles at the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, she leads systemic change across sectors to accelerate the circular transition in consumer products and textiles, working closely with companies, stakeholders, and partners worldwide. To support this transition, Nienke drives the uptake of Cradle to Cradle Certified®, the global circular product standard and certification, through sector strategies, marketing and communications, speaking engagements, and technical guidance.

Before joining the Institute, Nienke led international sustainability strategy and ESG consultancy at Modint, the Dutch trade association representing more than 500 apparel, interior textiles, and carpet brands and manufacturers. Her entrepreneurial spirit also led her to co‑found FTF Productions, a pioneering sustainable fashion brand and production company. Earlier in her career, she was among the first to take on a corporate responsibility manager role within a fashion company, helping to shape the foundations of sustainability practice in the sector.

Nienke continues to shape circular industries through thought leadership and collaboration. She has served on the advisory committee for the Circular Transition Indicators (CTI) and the Global Circularity Protocol (GCP), led by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the Fashion Pioneer Awards. She has contributed to several key initiatives, including the Agreement on Sustainable Garment & Textile, the Responsible Denim Alliance, and the Fair Wear Committee of Experts, and is co‑author of the Sustainable Material Guide for Apparel Companies (2016).

Nienke brings a rare blend of strategic insight, hands‑on experience, and unwavering commitment to building a truly sustainable and circular future.
