As the EU accelerates the transition to a circular economy through the ESPR and Digital Product Passports, one question becomes central: what does real circularity actually require in practice?

Cradle to Cradle Certified® Circularity provides a clear and actionable answer through three connected pillars: Circular Design, Circular Sourcing, and Circular Systems, built around the concept of materials flowing safely in biological and technical cycles.

1. Circular design: Products built for multiple lives

Circularity starts with design. Circular Design ensures products or materials are intentionally developed to stay in use longer and move into their next life, either within the technical cycle (reuse, repair, remanufacturing) or the biological cycle (safe return to nature, for example in cosmetics, cleaning agents, or natural fibres).

Key expectations include:

  • Design for technical and biological cycles, avoiding incompatible or contaminating material combinations

  • Durability to extend product use and material recovery over multiple lifecycles

  • Disassembly and repairability to enable maintenance and component recovery

  • Defined next-use pathways, such as reuse, recycling, or composting

The goal is not just to extend product life, but to enable continuous cycles by design.

2. Circular sourcing: Materials fit for healthy and continuous cycles

Circularity depends on what products are made of. Circular Sourcing ensures materials are recycled and/or renewable, responsibly sourced, safe, and suitable for continuous cycling, either circulating in closed technical loops or returning safely to the environment in the biological cycle.

Key expectations include:

  • Material transparency: understanding product composition down to a detailed level

  • Recycled and renewable inputs: increasing circular material use, responsibly sourced

  • Phasing out substances of concern

Simply put: circular materials must be sustainable, healthy, and cyclable.

3. Circular systems: Making circularity work in practice

Design and material choice alone are not enough. Systems must ensure products are actually recovered and cycled. Circular Systems focus on enabling circular outcomes at scale.

Key expectations include:

  • Take-back or collection systems to enable product return, whether through dedicated partners or municipal or EPR systems

  • Clear pathways for cycling, such as recycling, upcycling, biodegradation, and/or composting, with reuse, repair, refurbishment, and remanufacturing as additional pathways for optimisation

  • Collaboration across the circular value chain

  • Communication of circular performance, chemical testing, and cycling instructions through the Digital Product Report

Circularity only becomes real when products and materials are successfully recovered and kept in use, or safely returned to the biosphere.

Why this matters now

The shift underway in Europe is clear: from circular ambitions to measurable performance. With Digital Product Passports and the Empowering Consumers Directive on the horizon, companies will need to demonstrate, not just claim, circular performance.

That means showing:

  • How products are designed for longevity and recovery

  • What materials they are made of, and whether they are safe for people and the planet

  • How they are actually cycled in real-world systems
