Dr. Chris Helt

Lead– Material Health Practice

Chris Helt is Material Health Practice Lead at the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. In this role, Chris is a key member of the Institute team supporting global efforts to advance sustainable product design and manufacturing practices through the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard’s Material Health requirements and assessment methodologies.

Prior to joining the Institute, Chris worked at The Sustainability Consortium as a Senior Manager of Technical Development where he oversaw chemical safety and sustainability research for the Home and Personal Care Sector. His focus was on analyzing chemical safety hotspots in products and supply chains and engaging with TSC members to build metrics and tools for measurement tracking and progressive change. In this role, Chris led multi-stakeholder projects focused on beauty and personal care sustainability ratings and green chemistry innovation. Chris also worked in the private sector for Colgate-Palmolive Company as a Senior Research Scientist of Product Safety where he supported regulatory compliance through human health risk assessment of ingredients and final formulations.

Chris earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Molecular Toxicology and Environmental Medicine from The University of Rochester and his B.S. in Biochemistry from The Pennsylvania State University. His doctoral research focused on the cellular response to oxidative stress.
