Product certification

Help is on the way

When a company decides to certify a product, the first question it may have is, “who is doing the assessing?”

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is training consultants, service providers and packet auditors to both add third party verification and help expedite the certification process. These providers are essential in guiding companies through the protocol and ensuring independently audited applications.

The three different assessment provider categories are outlined below:

Consultants

Consultants that provide counsel to manufacturers interested in completing the certification process. These consultants have extensive knowledge in their specific sustainability field and can initiate the certification process by introducing Cradle to Cradle product certification to manufacturers.

Trained in the intricacies of the Cradle to Cradle product certification protocol, consultants share with industry the many benefits the protocol can bring to a business, its customers, its employees and the larger community. Consultants also help manufacturers extend their products into new markets by leveraging the Cradle to Cradle product certification mark and brand. These consultants have a deep understanding of local, state and federal product regulations and use this knowledge as a foundation to help manufacturers identify how they can comply with these requirements through the Cradle to Cradle product certification process. The Institute provides training for all consultants.

Service Providers

The Institute provides extensive training to service providers, who guide industry leaders in complying with the technical standards set forth in the Cradle to Cradle product certification. Service providers work with manufacturers across a range of industries to integrate the Cradle to Cradle product  certification protocol based on human and environmental health into the design of their products and the operations of their business as a whole.

Service providers will submit their assessments to the Institute for audit and review.

Packet auditor

The packet auditor conducts an in-house evaluation of the paperwork submitted by the consultants or assessors. In the auditing process, products are closely measured against the Cradle to Cradle product certification criteria to ensure veracity. The auditor provides confirmation that a product meets the prerequisites for certification. After an audit is complete, the Institute will issue the appropriate product certification based on the result of the audit. See here for the different Cradle to Cradle certification levels available.

Third-party auditing of our process

The Cradle to Cradle product certification process is subject to an independent, third-party auditor on an annual basis, ensuring adhesion to process guidelines. The auditor will pull a number of applications and conduct a second, primary-level data hazard assessment of the product. These random audits ensure integrity and transparency in the process.
